Chicago

Where to stay: Walmart!

  1. Have only been there twice -- both times on business for Neocon, the biggest contract design & furnishings show in the country. Takes place in the Merchandise Mart, a building that looks like it has more square footage than any building in America. It used to belong to the Kennedy family. There were many showrooms, so when we went, we made sure only to go to the ones with whom we had a business relationship! Once there was a Georgia O'Keefe exhibit at a museum, and it was in walking distance, so Gail (my boss) and I went. The bosses put us up in one of the best hotels in town, on the top floors which required an extra key in the elevator. We ate like kings and of course, all of that colored my view of Chicago as a very comfortable and rich town, which I know it isn't. But it's on the lake, which is nice, and there is the elevated subway, which makes an interesting square loop around near the Merchandise Mart, so of course, I went by myself to take it around! The river is pretty, too, and there might be a tourist boat somewhere to take. Chicago is also known for its steakhouses!
